Agriculture Gcse Geography

agriculture gcse geography
subsidies, set asides and tariffs etc!!?

I was wondering if somebody would kindly explain all (or some ) of these to me

like i need to know what they are and how they have affected farming

in doing GCSE geography (human -agriculture)

SET ASIDES
SUBSIDIES
TARIFFS
WOODLAND GRANT SCHEME
ARABLE AREA PAYMENTS
QUOTAS

thank you

Set aside is where the farmer has to leave 10% of their land natural (i.e. don’t farm on it) otherwise they do not get subsidies. This is done to protect the envioronment and prevent too intensive farming. It also has lead farmers to make other uses of their land like quad biking.

Subsidies are a payment that they are given per hectare of land depending on how its used. This has lead to farmers planting the crop that gives the highest subsidy such as oil seed rape.

A tariff is a fee that has to be paid to import produce. For example if an African farmer wants to send their wheat to the UK, they need to pay a fee to do so. This is intended to mean that home farmers get a better deal. But what it also means is that farmers in developing countries get a lower price for their farm produce.

The woodland grant scheme (now england rural development programme) gives money to help farmers convert some of their land into woodland. This is to increase woodland for wildlife and reduce carbon dioxide. It means that farmers in the UK are becoming less like farmers and more like guardians of the countryside.

The arable area payments scheme is similar to set aside, and it provides money to farmers to convert some of their producing land to natural land.

And finally quotas are limits set on farming. The most common use is for fish farming; where it is used to prevent over-fishing to protect fish stocks from dying out (which they still are doing). This is contraversial because fish farmers say it limits how much money they can make. But the fact of the issue is that there will be no fish left to fish in the future without fishing quotas.
